Happy Birthday, Papa!

This is one of the posts that I'm way behind on...how far behind you may ask...let's just say Papa's birthday is closer to April Fool's Day than it is to today's date! :-)

Back around Christmas, Mom, my sister, and myself started plotting for a surprise 60th birthday party for my Dad. If you know my Dad at all, you know he, along with most of my family, is a big planner and very much an A-type personality. That means that pulling something over on him involving this many people and with this many details was going to be a big feat. I have to say though, we got him, and got him good!

Mom worked tirelessly for months getting all the details together. The biggest thing was the decorations. I had seen something done at the school where I used to work where you put all kinds of different pictures in all kinds of different frames on the tables for decorations (ex. wedding shower = people donate copies of their wedding pics ending up ranging from the 1960's to the 2000's). It always turns out really creative and makes for great party conversations! Once I suggested it, Mom ran with it, and it turned out perfect! In the end, there were close to 60 pictures of Dad from when he was a baby to him at age 60! Some were stink'n hilarious, especially his teenage ones (aren't all of ours)! People that didn't know him until later in life got a really big kick out of it! There were also lots of them Emily and I had never seen. Mom dug out pictures from every knook and cranny (and then hid them back in other knooks and crannies so he didn't know what she was up to)!

After all her hard work, the big weekend came. We headed to West Texas on that Thursday, telling him we were just coming in for his birthday, one last trip before the baby comes. Since we usually aren't there for his birthday, he seemed a little surprised, but didn't suspect anything. He then thought we were all just going out to this great restaurant right outside of town called Cagle's Steaks for a small, quiet, family dinner. Right before the party, Jeff's and Garrett's job was to get Dad out of the house for a couple of hours while we headed out there to decorate. A really hard assignment for them, because they ended up at Gander Mountain. He thought the women were shopping around for the baby nursery, also not a far reach. The guys and girls were then going to meet up for dinner. A million texts back and forth and a ton of details that could have made it all not happen just perfectly (ex. Dad taking his sweet little time getting ready at the house and Jeff not wanting to see out of character by being impatient, etc.), Jeff had the man out there ready for his nice, quiet, family dinner.

Let me tell you, when they walked in and about 30 people yelled "SURPRISE!", Dad was definitely SURPRISED! It was a very memorable moment for everyone! For once in his 60 years of life, he was speechless! He was also very touched by all of Mom's hard work! The party was perfect!

Happy 60th Birthday, Papa!
