Alayna, Cade, and Abram are having to wait just a little while to meet their new little sister because Claire is spending a little time in the NICU up in Ft. Worth. Because she was born "peanut size" according to her Mommy (5 lbs. 3 oz.), her lungs are having to have some help breathing. I wanted to pass along some updates on baby Claire and some prayer requests from her parents.
This is a note Christian posted on facebook yesterday afternoon...
"Thanks for the well wishes and excitement regarding Claire Elizabeth’s birth. For those that haven’t heard yet, she was born Tuesday night 2/22 at 10:05pm weighing in at 5lbs. 3oz and measuring 20 in long. Everything went well with the operation and Claire appeared to be doing great. However, about 40 minutes later a nurse noticed her having a bit of trouble breathing. During the next few hours of observation to make sure she was doing ok, it became clear that her lungs were struggling so the team here put her on breathing and feeding tubes.
Claire has responded really well to her care so far but right now we’re hearing that she’ll have to stay in the hospital for about a week. And right now she’s living in the Neo-natal ICU, meaning we have to make special trips to see her and really can’t hold her. The nurses and docs here at Harris Southwest have been great and we can still spend time talking with her, praying over her and rubbing her back. (She’s really enjoying laying on her belly). The separation from Sarah is pretty difficult for her and we hate that her bro’s and sis can’t see her up close and personal until she’s out of NICU, but God’s kindness to us is evident. I’ve maintained some perspective and drawn great comfort from Psalm 71 today, including this:
Psalm 71:19-20
19 Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens.
You who have done great things, O God, who is like you?
20 You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again;
from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. (ESV)
I’d like to ask you to pray with us for a few things related to Sarah and Claire and our family.
* Pray that doctors and especially nurses that are caring for Claire would have great wisdom and continue to demonstrate the excellence, compassion and care that they already have.
* Pray that Claire’s lungs will develop fully and well and that she would be able to leave NICU.
* Pray that Claire would be able to be taken off oxygen as soon as possible so that Sarah would be able to nurse her.
* Pray for Sarah to recover well from her Cesarean Section.
* Pray for patience and understanding on the part of Alayna, Cade and Abram as they spend fun time with family but away from Mommy and Daddy and having not met their new sister.

Here are some other updates from yesterday and today...
(Sarah at 6 am on Wednesday) "Baby Claire: wednesday morning 3/24, 6 am."
(Sarah at 7 am on Wednesday) "Praying that Claire makes some improvements today. She has been mostly maintaining but still has to have quite a bit of help with the whole breathing thing and is therefore still on a feeing tube. Also still has iv going w/ antibiotics until cultures come back. She has also thrown spitting up at the nurses now just to keep things intresting."
(Christian at 11 am on Wednesday) "Claire improvement. She had the forced oxygen tube removed and is on regular oxygen."
(Sarah at noon on Wednesday) "Making progress... Claire at noon on wednesday. :)"
(Sarah at 4:00 pm on Wednesday) "Thankful for many praying family and friends. Claire is off the c-pap (big tubes O2 that helps force breathing) and onto just oxygen although it is still a higher concentration. Got to hold her quite a bit! Now she needs to keep down food from feeding tube - lots of spitting up."
(Sarah at 7:00 pm on Wednesday) "Just need to wean her off that extra O2."
Please be praying for sweet baby Claire Elizabeth! There are some arms that can't wait to hold her and take her home to some super excited brothers and sisters!
